Words Close Together

You may have noticed these three words, sometimes pushed together as WordsCloseTogether, sometimes separated by a space. WordsCloseTogether is our second search engine. The first which we created in 1984-1985 was a commercial engine called FindIt. We want our technical work to be used for the glory of God. We at Marpex Inc. applied FindIt to some 28 bibles in seven languages (English, French, German, Spanish, Latin, Greek, and Hebrew) during the years 1985 to 1992. It was a special joy to present two English and two French bibles on a laptop to Pope John Paul II in May 1990.

The ideas for both search engines have been received as gifts from God. He is marvellously creative; there are times in which we feel like spectators to what God is doing in the development process.

The Words CloseTogether engine solves a problem that plagues the better known search engines. The problem is to present the list of records found in a search in the way that will be most helpful to the person making the search. Too many methods fetch good material, but bury it in an avalanche of totally useless stuff. The underlying problem in relevance ranking is a technical one... the vast computer resources required if on every search the system has to look up each record to find out how far apart words appear in that record. Some systems restrict proximity capability, others give up on it entirely.

By the grace of God, the problem has been solved. If health, strength, and continuing grace are given, the technology will be applied to progressively larger sets of data through 2007. Watch both CatholicFind and the WordsCloseTogether site for developments.

Why another search engine? Here is why.
